It's getting to be that time of year... snowstorms, power-outages, chimney-fires, etc.
At this time of year I start thinking about what happens if I have to evacuate my tortoises from our home.
The emergency kit is based around a 45-gallon rolling storage container from home depot.
It's labeled and has a few holes drilled in the lid.
I taped some house wrap foil-backed insulation to the lid to stop heat from escaping upwards too quickly.
I've got four containers 17x12x7 inches in the larger container, once for each tortoise... they'll be a bit cramped inside, but it's not permanent.
There's a bit of mulch in each.
The bottom of the large container has as layer of the insulated foil, then a seedling h-mat, then a towel to keep things from sliding around. the heat-mat is running through a thermostat, powered by an automobile power converter.
I'm hopeful I'll never have to use it, but if I need it, I don't want to scramble putting something half-assed together which might result in my torts getting sick.
