So the cypress mulch didn't work out as planned, it was better as far as messiness but too pokey. So we got some sphagnum moss and moved the food and water dish.

is it ok that the substrate gets clumpy on his legs? what about it getting in his little neck skin?

I couldn't get him to eat the mazuri. i soaked it and crumbled it up...maybe i should grind it into a powder?

he picked the lettuce and hibiscus leaves out of it

I would grind it up.. i just use a hammer.. real high tech huh?

in a zip lock bag and a few little taps will work....
then soften it up with some squirts from a water bottle...

once you get used to the substance you will learn how moist you like it, they will help with the clumbs.

Keep it a little drier...like a fluffy wet...

Love the eating pics...those are always my fav

And the coir can be a little clumpy- I've found it only really sticks to Nelson when his legs are wet (after a soak or walking through his water dish) so I usually just dry him off and then he's fine.
I mixed organic top soil with my coir to make it a little sturdier.
Where did you get that coir? It looks really fine...mine has all these stupid stringy bits.

It's actually called Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss (it's organic and came from Lowes and it is really soft and fine). But I'm going to be switching up the enclosure again soon I think I'll just use the moss in the hide house and then use hay or something more sturdy in the rest of the enclosure.

hay will be to dry, i promise, you will start to see a pyramided tort soon.

But i still tried it myself, and just newspaper... just keep your current substance in a bucket, you will go back to it

Richard Fife recommends hay and the peat moss so I may give it a shot if I don't find something else I like better.

Also remember hay molds. So you if you keep peat moss around it and it gets wet check for mold frequently. And Terra is right, keep your old stuff in a bucket cuz you will most likely go back to it. He is very adorable...
