How long can my turtle be out of his tank. I read 30 minutes a day. I let him walk around my room a little bit. And when It gets nicer like spring and summer is it okay to bring him outside?
Your tortoise should not be out of his enclosure. Your enclosures, both indoors and out, should be large enough for your tortoise to meet his exercise needs in his own dedicated safe personal space. Putting him on the floor is a dangerous practice for many reasons.
Russian tortoises don't do very well living in the small space of a tank. Where in the world are you? We can help you design a large outdoor enclosure for your shelled buddy. Then he can spend all of spring and summer outdoors loving life and getting plenty of exercise
I live in Illinois and I have other pets so he has to have a tank not no huge thing. And the weather here is to risky. It's either -15 or 98. You never know. But I got my tortoise to have some fun not to stare at it all day. The pet store says I can hold him so I will continue he doesn't seem to mind it.
Tortoises play with great vigor. Many times I've seen mine play fetch; I put the food on one side of the enclosure and tell him to "go get it" and sure enough he goes right to the dandelion; but he has yet to master the bring it back part of fetching. But at least he has a yellowish sort of smile on his face.
They are also experts at the head bobbing game. He will bob his head upon seeing any of the other torts. But then I have to airlift one of the torts out of sight to prevent a more dominant expression of play time! And that's just part of the job as playground supervisor. But the outdoor time is rare this time of the year; so, when we get a 70 degree day I try to let them all get their time in the sun!
