I live in Riverside county,CA.It can get to 110 degree's in the summer and down to 35 in the winter.I have plenty of room inside, but don't want too big of a totoise like a sulcatta. What would be a good starter tortoise with lots of personality? Is their some that can be kept indoors with some outdoor time? I also don't want one thats too small as an adult either.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's your definition of small? That might help with suggestions.

From what you said so far I'd say a Russian Tortoise, but they don't get too big (< 8 inches on average I believe). They are known to have a lot of personality, good for beginner keepers (not as sensitive to temperature, etc), and able to be housed indoors or out. That's great you'd be able to give it some outdoors time. I just got one and he's great so far.

Best wishes!

Gopherus agassizii. My favorite species. They are sweet and loving with good outgoing personalities and are easy keepers. They can hibernate in the winter and your summers would be perfect for them. I didn't hibernate mine and they adjust easily to living in the house thru the winter...
Here's a couple of pictures so you can see how awesome they are. The adult is Mildred after she had eaten some strawberries. She certainly looks majestic and noble doesn't she? The other is Calie a yearling
