For those who don't know, fluoroquinolones are a class of antibiotics that can cause irreversible nerve damage. In 2013, the FDA added a boxed warning for nerve damage to all oral and injectable fluoroquinolones. The most common form of nerve damage caused by fluoroquinolones is peripheral neuropathy. Ligament and tendon damage is also possible. I've heard some cat and dog owners mention that this class of antibiotics injured their pets, and I'm wondering if this is also the case with our exotics. Since tortoises have slower metabolisms, courses of antibiotics are often more prolonged. Does this increase the risk of damage or is their unique physiology resistant to this sort of damage? A penny for your thoughts!
