Found a Tortoise

I live in San Jose CA. Found my dog trying to eat tgis cute little guy in my back yard today. Can someone tell me what kind of tortoise this is?

If its wild you are best putting it back (safely) near where you found it. Not sure if this is a native turtle for you or not. Hopefully someone more experienced can tell you.

Hi Ms.Giavy, and welcome to the forum!

Your dog has found someone's escaped pet. Put up some signs on the utility poles on your street and on the street that backs up to yours.

It's a three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis), and they are not native to California. The turtle's beak is pretty overgrown, telling me it has been in the house for a very long time and fed soft foods. They probably thought they'd do him a favor and took him outside for some sun, and he got away from them.

Who ever the fellas owner is you should recommend them to this site, the shell looks healthy and so does the weight, just her beak is over grown.
