if you are going to keep him i would let this guy live outside in a at least 4foot by 8foot enclosure he needs natural sunlight for his shell.
i would also put up sign because its mostly likely someones lost pet
no wild box turtles here in california

Your dog has found someone's escaped pet. Put up some signs on the utility poles on your street and on the street that backs up to yours.
It's a three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis), and they are not native to California. The turtle's beak is pretty overgrown, telling me it has been in the house for a very long time and fed soft foods. They probably thought they'd do him a favor and took him outside for some sun, and he got away from them.

Who ever the fellas owner is you should recommend them to this site, the shell looks healthy and so does the weight, just her beak is over grown.
