I was wondering, has anyone ever seen Frissee sold by itself, like you can by radicchio etc? It's the frizzy stuff in most spring mixes.

Thor loves Frissee. So much that I mix 1/4 inch pieces of grass in and he still eats everything. He is usually pretty good at picking the grasses out of his normal feedings, but not Frissee. It seems to be the best "camouflage" when mixing in grasses.

But the spring mixes usually only have enough for a couple of days. I havn't seen it at any local stores. Have tried a few of the bigger food stores and they dont seem to have it other than in the mixes.

Have you tried Meijer? Just saw bunches of frisee there the other day. They usually have a pretty darn diverse produce section.

I have tried about 3 Meijer's now. Maybe it's just my area. I'm in the 15 mile and Groesbeck area (Macomb County).

I did get some from a Nino Salvaggio's though. $4 a tub. Seems to not last that long too. On day 5, half I had to throw out. I could have gotten in on a day where it had been out for a few days though.

It really is amazing how much he loves Frissee and that he'll eat the grass in there and not be picky about it.

If you take it out of the tub and layer it in between some paper towels in an open ziplock bag, it will last a bit longer. Usually in the tubs they get too moist and go mushy faster.

I am way up in the north country, just south of TC and sometimes I am surprised at the variety of produce I can get. We just had a new produce market open in town that is all organically and locally grown. I am super stoked.

Ah, I have family in Roger's City and own a cottage on Black Lake up there :p.

I'm by Detroit if you don't know where Macomb county is.

Yup yup I do. I go to Detroit for a lot of concerts, usually at DTE and Harpos - sadly, I will never see my favorite band at Harpos again on Halloween, because they found him dead this morning of apparent heart failure. I am really tore up about it.

Ah, well, enough hi-jacking of your thread ;)

Rob,
Is there a Korean supermarket out your way? They typically have great variety of vegetables for great price....not sure about Frissee but if it's same as curly Endives they got them in bunch for sure. Good Luck.

Frissee is a kind of chickory- endive, radiocchino, etc. It appears to be another name for Curly Endive, and is also closely related to Escarole, which is fairly easy to find here in Omaha and my torts love.

Thank you Madkins I didn't know that. My Whole Foods sells it separate here, but I didn't buy it because I didn't know if it was good to give them all at once. Now I know. :D
