hi, i joined this forum yesterday, so far its been very cool reading all the posts. galileo is my 6 year old male. hes been w/ me a little over 4 years now. he was the size of the palm of my hand back then, i was able to rub noses w/ him until about a year ago, this year i can only carry him on my hip. i recently enlarged his yard and im fully expecting him to double his yearly weight gain of about 5#s per for the last 4 years. he was 19#s at his last years vet check and hes about due for another one, hes now 26#s and hes only been full time grazing for 2 mos. its like walking w/ dinosaurs, i love it. hes a very good boy, doesnt go after toes, doesnt ram and i never hand fed him, but he does love having his head and chin rubbed. hes lmy guard tort, his fenceline is right next door to my front door and whenever someone comes down, hes right there checking it out. with the new yard setup, theres no fence between my sliders and his yard, its so cool to look out the door and see him w/o a fence to look through. we live in the santa monica mtns of los angeles, very great place to raise a tort full time outside. his official home is a heated deck box inside a separate caged area, we have coyotes. i aint letting no mangy dog get my guy ;o) i still use a substrate, its been the large chunked coconut bark lately, easy to clean, always smells good and since galis not a digger at least hes got something to throw around, make a nest, whatever. we got a good plan going on here so far. galileo came to me because he was so cute when the size of a quarter at the pet store, the little girl next door had to have 2. short story, she lost interest, the little ones needed a home and asked me, never in my wildest dreams did i ever think i wanted a tort. marilyn, the 2nd tort didnt make it, died a week after she came to live w/ me. gali got sick too, really sick, i broke my ankle within a month of getting them, couldnt walk/work for 6 mos., had time to focus full time on getting gali well again and in the process, I FELL IN LOVE. galileo & speing big smiles

Hi Spring! I think you're going to enjoy posting on this forum once you get the hang of the format. I like it much better than YAHOOgroups, now that I've become more familiar with it. And the people here, even though some of them are on my YAHOOgroups, are so much friendlier and fun to talk to. I like that you can post a subject under its own heading rather than having to post in only one place. And we are much more forgiving of the way you take care of your animals...as long as you're trying to do right by them. Some of the groups I belong to on YAHOO don't allow you to have a different opinion than the owner of that group, but you can speak your mind here. We're always open to new ideas. I really like that you can post pictures right in the body of your postings. Looking forward to seeing pictures of Galileo.

I am so glad you came here Spring. Just like Yvonne says, nobody will get mad at you here for having a different opinion on caring for your tortoise. We are looking forward to seeing pictures of Gali cuz you can do this...

gali sounds cute - you REALLY need to post pics.

I am totally in love with my Percy, that it is making me tort crazy - well - sulcata crazy.

thats a gallant name janie, would love to see more pics of percy. im officially a tort nerd. i went to scotland last year because i met 4 fab women w/ torts a couple years ago and we talked every day on line, then decided we had to see eachother in person. it was an amazing trip and the women are fabulous. this year im planning on mtg 2 more fab women in country this time in september. who would have thunk a tortoise could open my world so wide for me? smiles, spring

thanks aaron, youve got quite a crew yourself. aint it fun? im a dogwalker/housesitter as my full time work passion, so i could go on and on about all the pets i care for. its a great life. about a year and a half ago i moved and it turns out that a couple of my neighbors have multiple torts and multiple species. i have a 110 # aldabra right up the street from me. its definitely a busy and happy life i have. smiles, galileo & spring

Spring: Once you get your picture either on photobucket or whatever, then you copy the code under the picture then come back to the forum and paste it in your reply.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Photobucket with a user account required or tinypic with no user account required (image codes) are great for uploading pictures.

Thanks so much for sharing Galileo with us. :) So cute!

If you look real close in the foxtail picture you will see that each seed head contains many, many individual seeds. Each seed has barbs along the outside of it so if it gets in between a dog's toes, down an ear canal or in an eye, they can only go forward, which they do. I've seen a dog with an eruption up on his leg from a fox tail that had started between his toes. All infected and very painful. When they get inside the tortoise's eye, or in his soft skin areas, it could become infected. And you usually don't see it until its a problem.
