Gnats....

I have growing in my tortoise table two sets of different grasses from Carolina Pet Supply for my tortoises.... though now I am having a problem in one of the food trays that has grown grass... I have a numerous amount of GNATS! How can I kill these things with out putting chemicals in the grass causing my tortoise to get sick?

I get knats as well! Usually a few a week, but I'm interested in the answer to this question as well.

Unfortunately you have to completely dry out the soil to kill the adults and eggs. Usually 3-4 days of completely dry soil will kill them.

I don't know what happened to my response but it didn't appear.

You need to place the tray outside and let the soil completely dry out and stay completely dry for 3-5 days. That will kill the gnats and their eggs.

Oh this is a duplicate thread. I'm not losing my mind.

You can pour boiling water on them or get a product called Knock out gnats from Garden's Alive

I believe there's a product called "Gnats Alive" (not sure) and it works to get rid of gnats. My sister has used it, but I haven't. Maybe she'll come on and give her expertise.

Oh well...I'm not losing my mind. This is a duplicate gnats thread!! I answered the other one that my sister used a product and I had it all wrong! Gnats Alive!!! Well, I was almost right.

fly paper out of the tortoise's reach kinda works.

I have used fly paper as well. It does not get to the root cause, but sure makes thinks a lot better.

On the "fruit feeding" days for my yellow foot babies, I come back at the end of the day to turn off lights and close up the door and their little habitat is swarming with fruit flies! I hang one of those rolls of fly paper above their habitat and I also let the spiders maintain webs in the shed. It doesn't eliminate the problem, but cuts down on it quite a bit.
