Your turtle is smart to avoid that container. It is a flipping hazard. Those are great for lizards and snakes, but dangerous for shelled reptiles.

Large terra cotta plant saucers sunk into the substrate work best.

For a box turtle I would use a paint roller tray. It'll have a gradual decline towards a shallow pool. Place it in the corner of an enclosure and you avoid a steep drop off at the deep end.
I agree that for a box turtle this paint tray idea would work much better than a regular terra-cotta saucer. Box turtles like water. No matter what type of box turtle it is. You can put a piece of slate or tile in the deep end if you're worried about traction. Or large pebbles, too big for the tortoise to swallow of course. The little terra-cotta saucer just isn't going to cut it
If you don't have enough room for a paint tray then try one of the plastic saucers that looks like terra-cotta. They are 2 inches deep and that would also work.

12-14" terra cotta saucers worked great for my young box turtles. Plastic surfaces offered no traction and he had trouble getting in and out.

We're talking about a small one, not an adult here.

OK, sorry. I wasn't sure if it was for an adult or a baby. But either way if you want traction in the bottom of it you can put pieces of rough tile or slate or those large pebbles. That gives good traction and you can very of the depth that way also.

I like the plant saucer idea but unless I find a small one or medium one I don't think it's gonna fit inside the terrarium this is the size of it

Well that is an easy fix! Get a bigger enclosure!!! :D

One nice thing about the terra cotta saucers is that they make them from 4" to 18". Get the right size one for your turtle and enclosure. The smaller ones are also shallower, which is good for a baby. I'll bet you could fit an 8 or 10" saucer in the enclosure as is.

I use 4" saucers to start hatchling tortoises and their dishes grow in size as they grow in size.
