I bought some Pennington Grass seed for some bald spots in the yard. My question is it has what they call "Penkoted" which says protects from fungas, promotes healthier growth and increases plant survial. How long must it grow before it is safe if my tortoise gets to it and eats it. Dont want anything to make it sick or worse yet kill the tortoise. Thanks for your time.

When I have planted seeds, even the pennington, I have waited about 2 plus weeks before they had access to it to ensure that the grass would have a good root system started. I figure anything extra that was put on the seed to help with growth will not be an issue after all the watering and growth that has taken place.

Of course I am not a plant or grass expert and this is just my opinion on what I do.

Call me odd, but I'll only buy completely organic food, seed, and plants for my family - and for my pets, too.

If you've never seen this, you might want to watch it. It's meant more for humans, but the logic still applies with our non-human family members.

WOW! Guess that was why I asked the question to make sure how long to wait so my tortoise and family didnt get sick from eating the grass.

I am sorry but until the price for organic becomes cheaper I will stick with the regular stuff. Organic items can get expensive especially if the local store only has a few organic items... I am still alive and healthy after eating the non organic stuff all my life, so I see no need in changing..

I suppose it's a bit cheaper to eat all organic if you live in a farming type of community. We have tons of local farmers, and meets, and farmer's markets here - they're cheaper than our grocery stores. It saves me money to eat organic.

I cannot remember who posted this link for me - but out of everything I've found - I really think that they're the best for an easy out for tort owners.

Best Seed Mix:

(Highly recommended for Sulcatas on the forum. It's cheaper than ordering multiple kinds of seeds, too - and they're all organic, safe, and natural food for your Sulcata.)

:)

If you're going to use what you've already bought - just heed dmarcus' advice, and wait 2 plus weeks... I've heard of some people waiting up to a month before offering it to their torts.

The only place to get real organic around me is Whole Foods and there prices are outrageous. It would cost me to much just to feed Vegas because he is a walking garbage desposal and he is only 46 pounds :p ....

It would be nice if I lived closer to farming type town.

Whew! Whole Foods would be way too much money for my little budget. There's no way I could eat organic if that's where I had to buy from! I don't blame you at all. And yeah - if you grow it, and don't use pesticides, it's still better than store-bought any day.
:D

Nutrients leach through the o and a soil horizon. The Na will settle on top. The nutrients begin to collect in the e horizon. Grasses have very shallow roots, the nutes are simply not available after a few waterings. The crap on the seeds in an anti fungal, a wetting agent and a mild fertilizer coating. By the time it has shoots, the nut's will be getting used up. Wait two weeks to give the lawn a root hold. Safe as can be.
