Hello everyone,

My 5 year old tortoise has not been eating for the past month or so. He eats little bits here and there but not what he was used to in the past.
He likes lettuce and he does not eat anything else with the exception of tortoise food that I moist in fresh water to keep him hydrated.
I soak him every day for 15 minutes, he pees with a white discharge but he’s not been pooping lately.

I have to add that during the summer, he’s eaten some cat food when we got distracted.

Taking him to a vet is not possible for me. I’m concerned that he’s not ready for hibernation as he’s not been eating. Any advice? It’s been really hot in California these past weeks, definitely not normal for him not to eat.

They have to brumate on an empty stomach and that is achieved by providing no food for 3 weeks prior to starting the brumation in a controlled cool area like a fridge. If you have health concern then brumation is off and you keep it fed, warm and active throughout winter. Tortoise can go without food as they are grazers and around this time of year they will stop eating. You have lots to consider. I recommend keeping a weekly weight log to check weight loss and gain.
Please read the care sheets and check set up...
