Can you please post pictures of the plastron and tail?
IMG_4659.jpeg

This is from a couple months back. He’s grown a little since then so if u needed an updated pic I can get it I just didn’t wanna mess with him now.

His tail normally stays tucked to the side and like I said he has flashed his wee wee at me several times b4. I would be a little surprised if he was a she but I won’t stop yall from investigating this theory.

I kinda hope not bc idk what to do if “she” were to get egg bound 😭 I was really happy to have a he bc they seemed like less trouble.

No matter what I’ll still love my bb tho <3

Yes, it does look like a male. Therefore, I can't explain the strange digging behavior. Perhaps it has a high level of female hormones right now for some reason which is triggering the egg laying/digging.

That's my best explanation.
A high level of female hormones? They can share hormones like that? Or r there hermaphrodite tortoises ? That would be v cool and interesting !

We had two females for 76 years and Jacky is still going strong at 90! She has never laid any eggs.

Animals, including humans, have both testosterone and estrogen in their systems and normally produce both. Males have more testosterone, and females have more estrogen. If one of the hormones is produced in excess or is suppressed by the body, the characteristics it triggers may be either expressed or absent.

An example would be women who have had hysterectomies or reached menopause growing facial hair. This is because there is more testosterone than estrogen in their systems after those events making some secondary sexual characteristics of males become more evident in the women.
