Definitely not. Tortoises are solitary, territorial creatures that should never be kept in pairs, and species should never be mixed. Mixing species allows for the introduction of pathogens not familiar to each species which can cause the spread of disease, and both of these species exhibit different behaviors that would likely cause conflicts. They also grow at different rates, leading to having one tortoise much larger than the other, which makes it much easier for bullying to occur.

That makes me so mad because my grandson was given a Salcata Tortoise which the vet sad was to young to be taken from his mother and wasn't eating. So my grandson went to a Pet Store and sold him a Leopard Tortoise to show him how to eat. Which makes me so mad at the Pet store. Because we had just taken the Salcata and his living quarters to make sure it was ok. They sold us some stuff and told us how to take care of him. I have been reading up so much on them and get so many different comments. After we did research on them and found out they shouldn't be together my grandson called the pet store and told them they shouldn't of sold him the Leopard Tortoise $270 later. Now what?

I hope that the experts here will be able to help and advise you. A few pictures of these tortoises would be useful to us as we try to help. You came to a great site for the purpose!

Oh man, that’s super unfortunate. Sounds like you need a new vet too, because tortoises don’t stay with their mothers at all. The mother lays the eggs, and continues on her way. The babies are on their own after that.

I highly recommend reading through these-

Can you get us pictures of the tortoises and their enclosure? Please also let us know about the temperatures (cool side, warm side, basking), as well as the humidity.

I'm sorry...."Too young to be taken from it's mother" is just funny.

Pet store employees. They crack me up!

But this was a VET? RUN AWAY!!!
Get another vet.
Seriously!
Do not go back there.

Maybe you can rehome your Leopard tort before y'all get too attached to him. They are beautiful and popular. I'm sure you can find a new, great home.
(Maybe even right here on this forum in a "for sale" post?
You and your grandson have found everything you'll need for your new hobby.
Best of luck to you.

That's a shame, but think of it this way: Pet stores are in business to sell stuff and make money. Nine times out of ten they don't have a clue how to care for tortoises, or what a tortoise needs to thrive.

If you don't have the resources to set up two individual enclosures, then I suggest you try to sell one of them. We'll help you all we can about how to get that sulcata eating. And the comment about the sulcata being too young to be taken from his mother, that's just stupid and shows how ignorant of tortoise keeping that vet is. I would not go back to him. Tortoises lay eggs in a deep hole then go off about their business, never giving that nest or its contents another thought. Those eggs hatch and the babies go off on their own, never ever even seeing their mother again.

Let us know what you decide to do, and we're here to give you all the verbal help and the benefit our our experience. That's what we're here for, and that's what we enjoy doing.

Tortstork basically proves that vet wrong on a regular basis. He provides ready to hatch tortoises in the egg that the owner may hatch themselves. Please do not hesitate to ask for our help that is what TFO is for

Wow, you should go back to those people and let them know how stupid they are and that they should not be touching an animal let alone giving out advice.
Sorry you had to deal with such stupidity.
However its true they can not be housed together. The sulcata will surely kill the leopard.
