I was just recently surprised with a tortoise or American water Turtle for Christmas. My mom said she saved it from the mean Chinese men in Chinatown, California. I researched and the tortoise I have is not a soft shell tortoise that would usually be found in a chinese market for turtle soup. I feel so bad that I don't know what kind he is and how to care for him. My mom says that I can just out him in the backyard and let him hibernate. I have no idea and I don't want him to get sick from the cold weather in Sonoma County, California. Can anyone help me?

Please post a picture or two. Someone WILL be able to identify what you have. Once we know, we can advise you on how to care for it.

$10 says it's a RES...

That's my guess.

Or this if it's a baby:

If it is 10 dollars and it was found in chinatown it is most likely a RES baby they sell them down there all the time from 5 to 10 depending on the place. But a pic would be helpful

I reread the post and I did not see ten dollars in there anywhere did I miss something? It would not be the first time.

....Or a Diamondback Terrapin, although unlikely on the west coast. They're all over the place on the east coast in those little markets, kept hidden in the back. It's insane. Threadstarter, please do not attempt to hibernate it in your backyard; that would be detrimental. Let's find out for sure what it is and go from there.

Maggie was betting $10 that it was a RES. I'm surprised that your quick wit missed that one!

I just reread maggie's post and now I see I thought she said 10$, it is a RES but I see now I am slow sometimes. If it a DBT for 10 dollars I need to know where they are in calif so I can go get some myself. :)

It is so frustrating to me when a new person comes on begging for HELP!!!...we offer advice, but they have signed off before any of our posts are read, (they signed off at 5:24p and the first answer for them didn't post until 5:26p) and then they don't come back for days. I'm left sitting here wondering if the poor turtle or tortoise is being taken care of properly or if it has died or frozen to death. ARG-G-G-H-G-H-G-H!!
