Hello everyone, I am new to this forum!
A few years ago, I used to keep Star tortoises in my home country. Now that I have moved to the US for school, I am looking to get a star baby!

I love looking at all the pictures of star tortoises here in this forum! :D

Hi Halcyon:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

May we know your name?

You're going to pay a pretty good price for a star here in the states.

Hi Yvonne, Thanks for the welcome! My name is Kylie and I currently live in Baltimore, MD.

When you say a pretty good price, do you mean a good low or good high? :) It seems like a star is about $400-500 here, am I right? I am hoping to get one from a good breeder!

I meant that they are probably much more expensive here than in your home country.

Yvonne: They sure are! But at least captive bred star tortoises are legal in the US.. I can't say the same from where I come from. I just didn't know better when I was a young kid.

Thank you everyone! hoping to learn more from the rest of you!

by the way, I have a rather silly question, I see people's signature in the forum, they list the pets they have and a string of number before. Could someone tell me what they mean? for example: this is from peter:
1.3.0 Russian Testudo horsfieldii

number, age? size??

It is not a silly question, in fact it is one of the most asked ones. It means Peter has 1 male, 3 females, and no unknown sex tortoises.

He/She has a tiny nuchal scute, which I have learnt from this forum to be rather unusual for a Chaco :shy:

Thanks Yvonne!
I got Chico from a breeder in western maryland. I was trying to avoid having to have a tortoise shipped across the country, so I started looking locally.
He also had Indian star babies, but he convinced me to get this one Chaco baby he had hatched in May 2011. So he/she is around 6 months old!
Breeder thinks Chico is more likely a female, but it is still very hard to tell for sure at this age, am I right? :p
