That is the TROPICAL ssp.. which will die below around 40F.. and will also die without 'some' light. They are grown in 1000 acre farms in the direct sun in Homestead, FL.

My outdoor enclosure is planted with "Rose of Sharon".. a very HARDY perrenial ssp of Hibiscus..

How about.. perennial? Comes back every year.. I've seen them 12' anyway. Mine were 2'-3' in '07!

The website of the "farm" I was talking about won't come up.... hmmmm wonder why?

Okay. I'm very late to this party, but it probably has the big "do not consume" sign because most nurseries use tons of pesticides. You can read about how to "detoxify" them on any of the chameleon, arachnid or pet insect sites. Personally, I just wash them off very thoroughly, several times and then wait... and wait... and wait... for new growth and flowers. If the flower or leaf didn't exist when the plant was at the nursery then I can't have any pesticide on it at all. Well, assuming that no one is coming in to your yard and spraying pesticides... Over time, and with seasons and rain the pesticides dissipate all by themselves too.

Hi Nobody;
Hibiscus is safe for all of you tort's.
Very low in Oxalic Acid & very high in Calcium.
It is among the best ornamental plants to feed your tort's.
Feed the flower & leaf. Heck my Redfoots will even eat any branches that they can bend down!

For anyone that is interested, I found this Hibiscus site the other day. I'm sure many of you have seen this site.
The have some very interesting plants.
I'm not much for "Fashion statements" But I think that several of these different types in a tortoise pen could rank a 9 or even a 10 on my "SPIFF" scale! (my scale goes to 11)

t-Mclellan,
Thanks for the information.The reason for me asking this question in regards to Hibiscus being high in oxalic acid is because I live here in the Philippines and Hibiscus is quite plentiful here.Now that I know that Hibiscus is low in oxalic acid,I can feed it more often to my Sulcatas.By the way,for your information,in the Philippines,Hibiscus is called "Guamamela".
