Yes and no. If you have the right Homes, meaning healthy, active, well hydrated, and eating and if you have the right set up, meaning high humidity, not too high of temps, nice ambient lighting, plenty of room, lots of hiding area, humid substrate, and if you have the right personality, meaning you have tons of patience, time and some imagination, then yes they can be easy. Fail on those and you will find them hard. Especially if you have an unhealthy, heavily stressed, or not eating hingeback you can be looking at a long term investment of time, energy, and money to get them turned around. Losses can be fairly high. Do not let the cheap purchase price and ease of availability fool you into thinking these tortoises are a great bargain.
Yes and no. You have to understand the animal in order for it to be easy. Most people don't understand the fact that they are about the most aquatic Tortoise you can find, need high humidity, and lots of protein for them to do well..........They also don't take too kindly to human interaction for the first few years in captivity for the most part, so they are not for everyone.......
I concur with all the above. Homes can be rewarding or heartbreaking. The purchase price is deceiving and hidden costs (i.e. vet) can be expensive. I would suggest them to experinced tort keepers. I will say when you get everything right they are great rewarding torts to keep.
