oh my goodness, most of the time i feel that it's the owner's job to research the animal and become informed before the purchase, and then they can adequately care for the animal, and it's THEIR responsibility. but seriously, this guy had to have a girlfriend, wife, friend, children, roomates, mother, freaking NEIGHBOR.... really!!!!!???? all those people who had to have been around him and not a single person thought that this activity was in appropriate, and called the animal shelters??? this is cruel, this is just as cruel as dog fighting, because the animal IS IN PAIN. even if it's like a fingernail, and once the hole is drilled it doesn't hurt, can you imagine being hefted around by your hands and feet??? that would be increadibly painful to your wrists, ankles, back... these poor turtles. i'm telling you what, that guy better hope that i never find him. i might really get put in jail for attacking him. and i'd find something to attack him with. i don't care if it's a rock or my shoe. i'm shaking right now and my eyes are getting blurry. this is the worst thing that i've seen in a long time. this guy was actually causing his animals pain every time they were carted around, but he's stupid enough to either not care or not know, just because a poor tortoise cannot cry out in pain like a puppy or kitten doesn't mean it's not hurting!!!!!

To be honest it almost looked like someone wanted a fashion accessory.

Thats what I was thinking. That box turtle looks like it has a gem on its rear mixed with the "handle".

The saddest part in my mind is that the original owner probably thought of this as a stroke of pure genius when he figured out you could put a handle on a tortoise X(

The poor things some people should not have pets. I hope the guy who posted that clip removed those handles as soon as he put the camera down and i hope a copy was sent to the RSPCA the person who did this needs prosecuting

The handles were removed ASAP, I think there was even another video of Mike "the reptile guy" removing the handles...At least this story had a happy ending. Although, it would be nice to see the person who did this held accountable.

OK not let me phrase this correctly. I do not condone what was done, but how should he be held responsible? is it a crime to do that?

Yes, it is a crime. Animal cruelty. And the perpetrator should be prosecuted.

A local man who does reptile rescue recently rescued these poor guys. Very sad...

Poor torts! Unfortunately, I have seen tortoises with holes drilled so they could be tethered in the yard. It's been years ago, and I can't even remember which town or state, but I remember the tortoises.

This was a common practice with CDTs back in the 70's and earlier. So sad. As was stated somewhere else on the forum: Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance hurts!

I have seen gopher torts with holes drilled in the back scutes for permanent marking when being relocated. It is horrible the things people will do to animals.

You think that's sad, that aint nothin! If you watch the video of him removing the handle, the end of the video gives you his web site. An even more sad story begins there! Please watch. Lets work together as a forum and raise some money for this cause!

He lives in BC, Canada and does educational shows to raise money to rescue reptiles like the torts with the handles. Due to changes in BC exotic reptile laws, his ability to raise money doing shows with exotics will change this December. Read and be sure to watch the attached video, it will leave you thinking how minor the handle really was.

I think I will start a new thread to bring attention this cause.
