My Horsefield lives outside during the summer months, he goes underground and doesn’t come up unless I bring him up. He will go days without eating, if he’s out in the garden he’ll run around, but as soon as he goes back to his enclosure he digs down.
He’s a definite male and he’s 16 or 17 years old. And we’ve just started hibernating him.

Tortoises sometimes 'estivate' during the hot summer months. Does your tortoise garden have shade and water?

Yes, fresh water and shade, nothing seems to coax him out 😳

What is the ambient temperature outside? Is it sunny or over cast? Can we see a picture of the enclosure? This might give us ideas to help you.

They typically go underground when it's too cold or too hot. I doubt it's too hot in Wales. You may need a cold frame, or a heated shelter with a basking bulb that he can retreat into periodically to warm up and stay active.
