Hi!
I am new here. I am considering getting two female hermann tortoises but we were gonna house them outside. After further reading I found lots of mixed views on housing hermanns and decided to join for some expert opinions.
I was going to build a lovely tortoise habitat at the end of the garden. There was gonna be a tortoise house filled with lots of straw. There was also gonna be dandelions and a shallow tray in the ground to provide easy access to water.
Help please?

Welcome.
You've been reading. Then you read to not get two tortoises?
They are solitary creatures and don't like company. However, if you have the space, it is possible to keep them in larger groups. groups ensure that there is no individual bullying.

I have read on a couple of websites that two males will fight, a male and a female will mate and then the female will get stressed and two females may get along. If they do not get along then we will split the enclosure.
Can they be housed outside?

Two females can still fight. Females are actually just as aggressive as males in many cases and will even mimic their exact behaviors so just keep watch.

As for proper care, I spent years trying to show people what to do for this species and how to have success with them. You can read all the pinned posts I have written at the top of this forum and you can also visit my Hermann's site which is completely dedicated to their husbandry, natural history and understanding: HermanniHaven.com

You will read many methods and you'll find that there are a variety of things that work. However, I have dedicated my entire life's work to mainly this species alone and have strived to share it with as many people as humanely possible so keep that in mind. I've chosen this forum to supply most of my literature and diagrams because it's the one I believe in most. Lots of great people on here, you can't go wrong.

Don't hesitate with any questions.

Thankyou! I will look into your posts tonight. Is there a specific post on housing that you would recommend?

For indoors I have had best success with house plants that are great tortoise food. Prayer Plant grows great indoors and is good food. Spider plant and aloe are great too
