Hi All,
Just wondered I am thinking of getting my baby YF a new
cage, however it is 19 inches high? What is the most lights
can be away from the tort to still be good on them? Thanks

I keep my lights about a foot (or a little less) above my tortoise. 19 inches seems a little high, but there's an easy solution. Put a curtain rod over the top of the cage and hang the lights from it so that the lights are practically in the cage. This is what I did... not sure if it will work for you. You can't see the curtain rod in the picture, but I put it across the top. Hope that helps!newcage 013.jpg

You should follow the suggested height on the box of the light/bulb you are using. I believe most are between 12 and 24 inches. This is for effective UVB. As for heat. You need to take temps under the heat bulb and adjust height as needed

Hi All,
Thanks as per the nice pic someone gave me that seems like
not enough bedding to me? I have a YF why could I not just put
more bedding in? I have 3-4 inches of my guys bedding now?
Thanks

Don't worry, I keep one half shallow and the other half four inches, if not higher. This picture was taken the day I cleaned her cage, so her dirt was dense and soggy. And you could put more dirt in to make it higher, but I find that is sometimes more expensive than a curtain rod. :)

Only your thermometer can answer this question.

Hi,
Am not really thinking about heat that is an easy fix,
I am more worried what is the farthest a UVB blub
can be from a tort for it to still get the benefits of it?
Thanks

It completely depends on the bulb. You honestly can't tell unless you have a UVB meter. Follow the directions on the packaging - anywhere between 8" and 24" will be recommended depending on which bulb you buy (most are on the 8-12" range). If you don't have a uv meter to adjust the height according to it, you can only go with what's on the package.
