WIth a good start, they can reach 400-500 grams by 8 months.

With a dry start, half that is good.

If yours has made it past the 50-60 gram mark, you are probably out of the woods, so to speak, and if temps, conditions, care, and diet are right, you should expect this baby to start sprouting in the next year.
Awesome! That is very uplifting, considering I haven't had him long. Like many here, I'm still learning tortoise care. I've been following all of the advice given, and I've seen great results so far. Tippie seems happy and healthy and is opening up to me more. Lately, he doesn't Tuck his head away when I reach for him. I'm so excited to watch him grow.

Many of them are shy for the first couple of years. I find that most of them really get bold and unafraid during their third year. Overall, I think they are a fantastic species and have the best personalities of any tortoise species out there. In a few years, I bet you will agree. :D

Good hydration is a must for the slow starters especially. I can't over emphasize the importance of daily soaks for your new little one.
