How often should I change substrate?

Every 6 months I do a complete change of the substrate.

I have several indoor tort tables with box turtles and a small tortoise. I was taught to use small grade orchid bark. But I moved to Oregon the tree state, and couldn't get anything here without pine in it. So in 3 tortoise tables I spot clean daily, and have not changed the substrate in 2 of them in over 10 years. In comparing the substrate now visually all 3 look the same. But if you can get good substrate, I'd change it out in a year or so, there's no hard fast rule here
