Is this how everyone measures scl.

How to measure your Tortoise:
1. Place the tortoise against the wall on a sheet of paper, place a straight edge vertically at the tail end and make a mark as shown.
2. Measure from the wall to the mark and you have the Straight Carapace Length (SCL).

Yes :)

I don't think any of my torts would like that way of measuring. They barely ever pull their heads in anyone... when they're sleeping only.

I pretty much take a measuring stick to their plastron and line it up as best as possible.

It only works when Joe is cold and won't wander off! :D

In my experience, using calipers is easier than trying to squish a tort's head into its shell.

I went to my friends house yesterday and he has a Russian tortoise when I saw him I was shocked he was huge measuring out at, 12 1/2 inches. TRULY INCREDIBLE!

Holy Cr*p!!! Thats big lady!

Even if the measurement is taken over the carapace curve instead of SCL, its still a big Russian!

Pretty much you sit the tort on a tape measure lined up with 0 at the back of the shell, and see what number is at the very front edge of shell. Thats more or less an easier way of saying what those other directions say, I think.
I have one thats exactly 8". I, like most others here, would love to see this tort in a pic with a tape measure.
She is a beaut!

I think it'd be awesome if it were true, but sometimes I think only guys measure tortoises because size is so often exaggerated :p

Seriously though, I've seen so many pictures of "look at much 9" tortoise" topics only to find out that the person is measuring from the top of their stretched heads to the very backs of their stretched feet!

SCL, people!

LOL people can be so dishonest. They do it with betta fish too.
