Can there be to much humidity for a sulcata tortoise
Thanks but i was wondering can there be to much humidity
How much is to much
Hippo's (his name) basking spot is 100-107 and the humidity is at 89 but can go up to 99 at times and i was wondering if it could be too much humidity or too moist
HI, im new to this forum but i actually found this website... This sulcata project is near me and I contacted to owner and he has been really helpful with alot of info i thought was right was actually wrong. wont hurt to read this. you will learn alot about them that you didnt know AND it will answer your humidity question.
We go through this every few months. That website was put up years ago by my friend Dave. He and I talk on the phone from time to time and he has personally, after much discussion with many people, relented that I might be right about some of this stuff. Dave is a great guy, but he is very old school in his methods and his failing health prevents him from keeping up with current tortoise husbandry practices. Following the tips on his site will not usually bring good results. I would love for someone to get a baby, follow Dave's advice and prove me wrong, but I know how it will end, because I did it Dave's way for many years. Dave has not ever done it my way.
But thanks for joining and established community and posting a link that tries to undo everything we've worked for here.
Well you don't seem to be very friendly. I apologize if my post offended you or whatever. like I said im new to this and just thought I was being helpful. If im wrong them im wrong you don't have to be rude about it. im actually going to leave this forum because I thought joining i would actually meet friendly people that are willing to help other tortoise lover, owners and not be rude. So Thanks im out. ill try and find another forum to join where the people are a bit nicer.
THANKs TOM!!!!
It seems as if this forum has a large group of offended people who won't take responsibility. unfortunately for you Tom you seem to attract them all.Oh lighten up. Why does everyone think someone is offended if they point out disagreements? I'm not offended by your post. I'm just pointing out that the info you linked is not the info people should be following. Not for you either.
And what is rude about my post? I'm just making tortoise conversation. I think you are jumping to some pretty big conclusions way to prematurely. If you are one of those sensitive types, then maybe the entire internet is not for you.
In any case, you are certainly welcome to stay here and enjoy the forum. I won't bother you. I won't even respond to your posts as long as you aren't linking old out-dated info to people.
Hi Tom... I’ve bought various humidity gauges and they are all VERY inconsistent!!! Can u recommend a good one? What device are you using to measure your humidity?
The stick on dial types are notoriously inaccurate and unreliable.
Over the years I have used a lot of "Accu-Rite" brand digital ones and for the last couple of years, those ones have been terrible at measuring humidity accurately.
You need to raise up your basking lamp and inch or two. 100-107 is just a little high. Not the end of the world, but just a little high.
Also, if you are using an open topped enclosure and temps are that hot, it is unlikely that humidity is that high.
You've made the right choice. As I explained to the poster above in 2016, that old info is incorrect and it leads to the death of a large percentage of the babies that hatch annually. Dave wrote that site to directly contradict the work we were doing here 10 years ago. He's since gone back on it all, but the site still sits there. I haven't talked to Dave in years now. I don't do FB or any of that stuff, so I hope he's doing okay.Hi Tom... I’ve bought various humidity gauges and they are all VERY inconsistent!!! Can u recommend a good one?
Also, the other website that someone posted on this thread is pretty contrary to what you have recommended to me. I’m still sticking with you. Just wondering if you saw the link. It says to not soak, I bathe mine every day for 30 min. It says humidity at 40%... I have mine way higher... I just hate that there’s so much info out there that drastically conflicts ... do you recommend turning off the CHE at night?
