How much is to much

No one has studied this. I cannot tell you that 86.3% is perfectly safe, but 86.4% is somehow detrimental. It doesn't work that way.

People in FL and Louisiana have them living outside in 100% humidity and they thrive. However, if allowed to get too cool under those conditions, sickness is likely. Sulcatas are not prone to shell rot, but if left too wet or in damp, unsanitary conditions, it could be a problem.

Having them breathe in the fog from an ultrasonic humidifier all day long might pose a problem too. I don't do it, so I can't say for sure, but it seems like that might not be good for them or any other animal.

Maybe if you explained why you are asking and what your issue is, we would have some practical tips for you.

I use a fogger, and it can get over 80% at times. I don't use it all day, though. I let it get to 80% and then turn it off. Also, I'll turn it on only when I have the basking (MVB) light on. At night when I have the CHE on, I don't use it. Like Tom said, if humidity is over 80% and temps aren't 80+, that wouldn't be good for the tort. He/she will likely get a RI or worse. With my larger tortoises, I use a humidifier but, unless it's real humid outside, the humidity levels get to about 75-80% There's no chance that humidity levels reach over 80% with just one humidifier in a 12' x 15' insulated shed. And temps are always 80 degrees or higher.

Hippo's (his name) basking spot is 100-107 and the humidity is at 89 but can go up to 99 at times and i was wondering if it could be too much humidity or too moist

What device are you using to measure your humidity?

The stick on dial types are notoriously inaccurate and unreliable.

Over the years I have used a lot of "Accu-Rite" brand digital ones and for the last couple of years, those ones have been terrible at measuring humidity accurately.

You need to raise up your basking lamp and inch or two. 100-107 is just a little high. Not the end of the world, but just a little high.

Also, if you are using an open topped enclosure and temps are that hot, it is unlikely that humidity is that high.

HI, im new to this forum but i actually found this website... This sulcata project is near me and I contacted to owner and he has been really helpful with alot of info i thought was right was actually wrong. wont hurt to read this. you will learn alot about them that you didnt know AND it will answer your humidity question.

We go through this every few months. That website was put up years ago by my friend Dave. He and I talk on the phone from time to time and he has personally, after much discussion with many people, relented that I might be right about some of this stuff. Dave is a great guy, but he is very old school in his methods and his failing health prevents him from keeping up with current tortoise husbandry practices. Following the tips on his site will not usually bring good results. I would love for someone to get a baby, follow Dave's advice and prove me wrong, but I know how it will end, because I did it Dave's way for many years. Dave has not ever done it my way.

But thanks for joining and established community and posting a link that tries to undo everything we've worked for here.

Oh lighten up. Why does everyone think someone is offended if they point out disagreements? I'm not offended by your post. I'm just pointing out that the info you linked is not the info people should be following. Not for you either.

And what is rude about my post? I'm just making tortoise conversation. I think you are jumping to some pretty big conclusions way to prematurely. If you are one of those sensitive types, then maybe the entire internet is not for you.

In any case, you are certainly welcome to stay here and enjoy the forum. I won't bother you. I won't even respond to your posts as long as you aren't linking old out-dated info to people.

Hi Tom... I’ve bought various humidity gauges and they are all VERY inconsistent!!! Can u recommend a good one?
Also, the other website that someone posted on this thread is pretty contrary to what you have recommended to me. I’m still sticking with you. Just wondering if you saw the link. It says to not soak, I bathe mine every day for 30 min. It says humidity at 40%... I have mine way higher... I just hate that there’s so much info out there that drastically conflicts ... do you recommend turning off the CHE at night?

Greetings. The best use of a CHE is to use with a thermostat On 24/7. Let the thermostat do the work to maintain your tort‘s proper temps.

Get the right hight, set the temp probe, and good to go.

You've made the right choice. As I explained to the poster above in 2016, that old info is incorrect and it leads to the death of a large percentage of the babies that hatch annually. Dave wrote that site to directly contradict the work we were doing here 10 years ago. He's since gone back on it all, but the site still sits there. I haven't talked to Dave in years now. I don't do FB or any of that stuff, so I hope he's doing okay.

Keep soaking daily. Keep your humidity 80% or higher, and your CHE should be set on a thermostat so that it runs day and night to keep the ambient temps above 80F.

Opuntia cactus are prickly (Tom) but I will suffer them for my torts to enjoy and thrive on. That’s just how it is cause “Torting ain’t easy!”
