They really are an awesome tortoise. You clearly "get it".

Like Laura said, they should feel heavy for their size when you pick them up. They should feel like a rock... Sadly most pet stores still think they come from deserts and keep them much too dry and dehydrated.

Are you up for the challenge of trying to educate your pet shop? You can always refer them here. I'd be happy to call them...

i have never held another to compare to..so i didnt know...they said they just got him in and i could see pyramiding...they tried to brush it off by saying "oh, thats because when he was younger he was always on his back, and his shell turned out that way"..I already knew that was a lie as I have been getting info on TFO....I will say that most pet shops really do not have much knowledge from what I have gathered about them...I saw there were beansprouts dried up in the dish...and no hide...I asked about the hide and they said it was getting bleached in the back by the sink...ummm ok.. and she made some excuse about the food saying they bought it for the iguanas and wanted to try it with the sulcata...the price for the sully was $185.00...idk if thats normal but one thing I do know..thats face was hard to pass by!

That is a lot for a small sulcata. $185 is actually a bit outrageous...

I hear ya. The first time I held one, I fell in love. Then I did my research and well decided to fall in love with a leopard instead. The digging/tunneling turned me off:D

I met two sulcatas that my vet keeps as rescues. He's got a yard for them too! They are brilliant creatures, far more intelligent than my Russian. They looked right at me, I could tell they knew I was a new person and they were excited to meet me. Very friendly, outgoing guys. I'm getting one as soon as I get a house. It could be years til that happens, but I really want one!

I don't think I could ever buy a tortoise from someone who said "oh, thats because when he was younger he was always on his back, and his shell turned out that way"

I got my Sulcata hatchling for $50 from someone off craigslist. It was all fine and healthy. they even gave me lamps and a little bin for it to live in!
