you should be fine dont worry ive seen it before and it should be harmlessDesertGrandma said:It does come out of the ground. I raked it a little bit and it just popped right out with the soil. Do you have any idea what it is? It must have been in the organic soil I used in the pen, and have been watering more lately too. Do you think it is toxic? Should I worry?
Redstrike said:Hello,
These are "Birds nest Fungi", a saprophytic (decomposing) mushroom. Their taxonomy is currently a bit messy, but I can tell you that the "eggs" within the "nest" are a spring-loaded spore packet. When rain contacts them, a small coil is activated by the water and launches from the fungal fruiting body, spreading the spores.
I'm not sure if they're toxic, but I do see them frequently on mulched areas like gardens...let's hope your tortoise ignores them for now. I don't know if there are any Mycologists on this forum, but they might have some inclinations pertaining to the groups toxicity. Maybe poke around and see what you turn up???

I did a little more poking on the internet and they don't appear to be toxic as far as I can tell. Very interesting fungi. Thanks for the identification.
