I was talking to my friend who owns and occasionally breeds leopard geckos and I asked her if she noticed an increase in the electricity bill while the eggs were in the incubator, and she shocked me when she replied "I don't you an incubator, I leave them in the room"

Do any of you think that tortoise eggs could be incubated this way?
I live in LA and apparently tortoise eggs can been know to naturally incubate http://www.tortoise.org/general/natural.html
What do you think? I don't have eggs or even breed but just curious :)

Most, if not all tortoise eggs need more than room temp to incubate. Incubating in the ground outside requires intense summer heat and the sun beating down n the nest. They will not develop in shady areas even when temps are in the 100's here.

I'll bet your gecko friend puts the deli cups in a warmer than room temp area. On top of a cage or in a reptile room maybe?

Most incubators run intermittently at 25-40 watts. This will not be "noticeable" on the electric bill.

Jacqui:

What are those? they look like Manouria. And is the one a double scute?

And to keep on topic:

I have hatched box turtle eggs just sitting on a closet shelf in the back bedroom.

I've done my torts and box turtles and water turtles outside but you can have a lot of problems one is ants ( and this year we had a lot of ant problems ) and
If you water to much to keep the grass growing that can hurt the eggs and then
The tort problem it's not uncommon that
Mommy tort really likes that spot so much that she diggs up the nest to burry
The next batch of eggs . This why I bring in my eggs to hatch
