Just a week to go until I get my Herman, soooo excitied. But I have a last minute panic regarding the basking for my indoor enclosure ...

I was told an ordinary 100w household spotlight for basking is fine (I've got a ceramic holder). HOWEVER, I have tried it and it gives off a LOT of heat and is VERY hot. I am afraid I will bake the poor thing alive!

What do you suggest please?

Lower wattage bulb, raise the fixture, get a larger enclosure, use a rheostat to turn down the heat a bit.

Any of the above should solve this problem.

What species are you getting? What size enclosure?

I am getting a Hermann of approx 18 months, 600mm. The enclosure is currently an indoor rabbit/guinea pig cage sized 80 x 45 x 42 cm but I will be doubling this to 160cm x 45cm in a months time. I have a Repti Glo 10.0 UVB tube

I agree, raise the light, and or change the wattage, should solve any problem.

Thank you. think I may start with the lower wattage, especially at this time of year. I get my tortoise next weekend so will have a week to do some temperature checks etc
