What a week so far, I have had a map turtle brought to me that has no nails and it's legs are swollen and pink,
Apparently a vet ( general) said it was burns from the water heater,

I being me disagreed, burns generally don't look like that, his nails grow through then fall of again, as he has a lot of white marks all over his shell, I am thinking an infection or parasite of some sought, so I am treating him.

Then another map turtle came in, he was about 6cm in length but the biggest abscesses I had ever seen on such a small turtle, it reminded me of princess leis in star wars,
We sedated him and cut open the abcess, needles to say it was a solid mass, in both ears, so we gave him a shot of antibiotics and told the owner to clean the wound with a solution everyday and to keep his enclosure cleaner.

Then in came a Mauremys Leprosa, adult male, he looked as if he had been dragged along by the top of his shell, and also had damage to his plastron, apart from that he is quite healthy and loves eating the stores goldfish.

Then tonight another Mauremys Leprosa but this time a juvenile male,
He had obviously been attacked by a dog or could be a rat.

He has a very large punter wound on the top of his shell very close to the lungs for my liking, I cleaned the wound but I need to sedate him tomorrow to get the piece of shell out before it cause an in fection, if that is not all he has a very large crack on the scute under his neck and a smaller punter wound on his back near to his tail. What I have done is I gave him some pain
killers and a shot of antibiotics, and made him as comfortable as I could under the circumstances,

The people that found him want to keep him, however this turtle is a protected species natural to Spain, so I am going to tell them it's going to be a very large vet bill,
Then I can have the protection of wild animals come pick him up along with the other fella, that way he will have a specialized vet look at him.

Sorry for ranting just need to let of steam!!!

I will post pics of all three tomorrow so you can all see them.
Thankyou

Sounds like a very busy week! How often do you usually get turtles or tortoises in?

I would just explain to the people that it is a protected species and maybe recommend another species for them, if they are still interested in getting a turtle.

I hope they all make quick recoveries, keep us posted.

I already told them it's protected, they don't care.
So I'm just gonna tell them that the vet bill will be in the hundreds, that way they will not want him..

On average this time of year I will get anything between 3 and 6 reptiles every 10 days or so, most being torts, turfs, and chameleons.

It is hard as not all can be saved,
But 80% of the injured or sick reptiles that come to me could have been avoided by their owners knowing that reps husbandry,

Makes me sooo mad...

I am gonna phone the sanctuary and tell them to take both turts (leprosa) and then just say the inspector came and took them both..
