This is a very interesting picture. The sulcata's gular was chewed off by a dog. The 'stuff' that grew back when it healed is leg scales. So this tortoise now has leg scales where his gular should be. I just found that terribly interesting!:

I guess that's enough for now. Misty's telling me it's time for her lunch.

That is so strange! Why would such a thing happen? His body needed to cover the wound, so I would have thought maybe skin. Maybe scales are made of keratin, which would kind of make sense to replace bone.
But other broken shells haven't been fixed with scales, have they?

I'm just thinking out loud here...no idea what I'm talking about.

Can someone explain this to me?

I know, huh? It's really amazing to me. It was all a raw wound and when it started healing leg scales grew. And they're not hap hazard either. It's all very symmetrical and pleasing to see.

I wonder is the grow back is leg and scales and since there is not gular....it has the appearance of growing in its place?
