Need some help guys. I have a 6 year old female leopard tortoise that has a broken leg. We took her to the vet and its confirmed through X-Ray. The vet suggested using a pad and duct tape to hold the leg inside the shell. At the vet she was very shy and pulled 100% in…and the leg can not come out after putting on the pad and duct tape.

Has anyone had luck with this type of treatment? The bone is not completely lined up, but the vet said it should heal across the gap if the alignment is close enough. The issue is the vet can not X-Ray on 2 axis so it’s hard to tell if the break is close in the other direction as well.

The other option is to get it surgically corrected which has its own set of risks like infection at the entry wound site.

I would love to hear about other folks that have had similar situations and how they turned out. Has anyone had the surgery option done??

There is no way I can see that healing correctly at all if it's not set correctly.
The tortoise should have been sedated, the bones aligned and then taped/cast of some sort or surgery.
Maybe @Yvonne G has seen something similar with all her rescue years
