Hello!
I am currently building an outdoor enclosure for my leopard tortoise. I live in North Carolina. What base substrate should I use? The natural soil we have is very sandy.. I plan on growing a variety of grasses and weeds inside the enclosure.
Is the natural soil okay?
Thank you!

Sandy like beach type sand or dirt? Is that only under the grass/weeds?
Usually in outside enclosures the natural ground is used. The only real problems is if it's got lots of small stones or you're building on beach sand or all cement.

This kind of set up but room sized if they’re an adult and maybe RHP’s instead of bulbs could work for you, I go over substrate etc🙂

Other than sandy soil, what does the area look like now? Is there grass growing there? If the existing grass/weed coverage is sparse, you could till and amend the soil in that area with organic matter, eg compost, coir, peat. If theres fuller grass/weed cover, then you could leave that in place and overseed with different grasses & weeds.

She's asking about an outdoor enclosure substrate. Not indoor.
