Hello! I bought this cork hide a couple months ago at an expo and recently noticed it started growing lichens, is that ok or does it need replaced? I’ve removed it since discovering it because I don’t know if it’s safe, it’s a 9 month greek tortoise. Thanks! Greetings.

i really don’t think those few areas of lichen on your hide are anything to worry about. I would just give that log a very thorough soaking so it has an opportunity to absorb water & get thoroughly saturated. The log is just one part of the decor in your enclosure. I’m sure you will be adding a good substrate, some plants, etc. AND you will be providing your tortoise with a daily supply of good food. Soooo, the food you supply should satisfy your tort’s needs. Might it nibble on the lichen? Sure, probably but nothing that I would worry about.

So, what kind of tortoise & how large is your enclosure?

Good luck
