I am interested in getting opinions on this one. We are trying to "motivate" our Russian T to drink and hang out in his water dish more. We installed a basking lamp above the dish and closely monitor the water temperature. What do you think?

I saw someone put some of their tortoise's favorite food in the water, which helped them drink and bathe at the same time as snacking!

If he has another, "dry", basking spot - no problem. If it's the only basking area and a single water dish he might not be able to warm up properly and water will evaporate quickly.

You can spray water on top of his food and pour a bit in the food dish. As I understand, staying in water is not very natural behaviour for Russian tortoises but a few can actually enjoy it.

Thank you for this info :) oh yes, he does have another " dry area" basking light.

I think the result and the effect will vary with each tortoise, and with the same tortoise over time and seasonally.

I don't think there is any harm in this, and there may be some benefit.

Hmmm, interesting experiment. Will their love of heat outweigh their hatred of water...?

Will be interested so see what happens!
He really likes his water dish and walks up the ramp to get to it.
