WHOA, I've never heard of a 600w bulb! I would check the temps again and again to see if it gets too hot. Temp guns work great for this :D

The only thing I would question is that it says its for "low" level uv output. Not sure if torts are a low uv level need. Unless you get them outside often....

As long as the regular incandesce light bulb gives off enough heat, it should be ok for use in the basking spot. You'll need to use a thermometre to make sure your temps meet requirement for your tort.

Yep, a reg flood bulb provides heat. So does a che, if you only meed heat and not additional light.

It's a powerful bulb, but you can easily regulate heat by adjusting the distance from the basking spot.

I might get rid of it. It's so bright that I am scared it will blind Benjy.

I've never heard of those lights causing any damage, but I could be wrong.

Could an Exo terra 160 watt mercury vapour uvb/heat lamp blind my baby tortoise? It just seems so bright.

I'd say no. I have no experience with the tube lights, but that just seems very low in my opinion...

It should be OK because it'll be on for a good part of the day. Steady exposure is good. A 5% tube would be ideal. http://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/rep...-562/swell-rainforest-5-uvb-lamps-323011.html
Be sure to place the feeding station directly under it, so your tort is sure to get UVB exposure for the time he's eating; at least 10-15 minutes. Also, these lights are effective up to 2 feet away, but make sure to remove any plastic/glass cover on the unit itself and any screen/mesh cover on the enclosure.

I use a 160w powersun and have no eye problems. That's going to be a good amount of heat though
