What kind of lights are you talking about? UV or heat? What brand? And what kind of tortoise do you have?

Both UV and heat, the light works are 2 drop lights with metal domes. I have a Russian Tortoise. I just purchased him/her from a private seller. I am a novice at this so any help would be much appreciated

Here is the care info. It explains the heating and lighting and all sorts of other stuff too.

Only your thermometer can tell you how high to mount your basking bulb. There are a lot of variables: Wattage, bulb type, fixture type, enclosure type, substrate, ambient room temp, what basking rock is under your lamp, etc…

Like wise, only a good UV meter can tell you how high to hang your UV bulbs. We can guesstimate, but, that is not ideal. If you have a cfl type UV bulb, I recommend you return it and get a long tube instead. Those coil types sometimes damage reptile eyes, and they aren't all that effective as a UV source anyway.
