I was super excited to find Mallow in my father in laws yard yesterday! I brought home a bucket full to transplant but since I do not have any of this in my yard I need to ask:

Where does it typically grow well? Sun or shade? By trees or house?

His was near a barn & I am not sure how much sun that area gets & neither was he. 20140703_094949.jpg

Dont be surprised if it all dies off and appears to not have survived....keep on tending to it, it will likely then come back fully next year...

Yes! this happens for me too ;)
Me too. I collected seeds and planted them all over the yard. Nothing sprouted. The next winter (mid-February) my yard was full of mallow. Now I have it from February until June when the summer sun burns it all off again.

They grow fine with water in full sun, but transplants are def best off in the shade. When transplanting it often helps to remove some of the leaves and cut leaves you keep to half size so that the traumatized roots don't have as much work to do.

I have mallow EVERYWHERE. It wilts in to much sun, and I water mine a lot to keep it healthy. My tort hardly ever eats it, but it's a nice plant that grows big.

I put it in the shade and so far it looks good. They were all small plants so hopefully they take off. Thanks all!

Just saw this plant at my mom's today! Silly me took a cutting thinking it might propagate like geraniums. I'll have to take some pieces with roots next time I go. :)

It will occasionally grow in a heavily water area in the warmer months, but this is a winter plant for me here. My torts eat a lot of it from about December to May. It is a great tortoise food. It just grows wild at my place. I could begin to tell you how to grow it on purpose. The summer sun does kill it here though. It won't survive much past May here. It likes rain and cool weather. It grows for me in full sun areas and partial sun areas.

I planted it where it only would get the early sun, but a giant row of trees keep that side cool. Put it right against my house and that area stays pretty damp. I have a lot of moss over there too. This is day 3 and it still looks good. I'm hoping for seeds. If not I will go back an collect some from my father in laws place. Its still kinda strange to be bringing weeds into the yard instead of pulling them :)
