This a.m. while I was walking around, opening the habitats and feeding the babies, I saw this going on in little Emmie's pen:

We have many, many fig beetles flying around this time of year. It is a huge iridescent green beetle that sits on the ripe figs on the tree and makes holes in the fruit, ruining it for picking. The tortoises still like it though. The beetles fly around and sound like a mini helicopter.

I was very surprised to see that Emmie had caught one, or that she even knew it was edible. She had a hard time eating it because it was stuck to her upper beak.

Yum! I can tell you that mine will eat anything of reasonable size and that move slow enough to get their sights dialed in on. Including baby Sparrows knocked out of their nest by those nasty Blue Jays.

Mine have eaten sowbugs, earthworms, and the occasional spider. They also love junebugs. Forageing is fun.

Hi Yvonne,

I have started a colony of garden snails for the little guys here. I will wait for an F2 group, and start feeding then. I already have an F1, so maybe in a few months time at most. I'm rearing the first baby snails of Layena and grassland tortoise pellets and they are growing visibly from one day to the next.

Will

So those that I planted on my last visit are still unknown to you?;)

HAHA. Now thats funny. My guys love the bugs. Mainly beetles they find are easiest for them to catch.
