Almost everything here is one pair per enclosure. I put a male in with another male and let them scuffel but am ready with a big boot to put between them when they start biting. The introduced male must be the looser. All they need is to ram the intruder and turn it over or I will turn it over and if they just see the intruder upside down, that is good enough. Males can really hurt each other very badly and face and eye injuries are common. I just had a male brake through a metal wall into another enclosure and fight with the male. Luckly I walk they enclosures multy times a day and was able to save the turned over beat up male in time. They dont always stop after the turn over and one will bite the head/face and feet of the turned over one. Just to make everything for the keeper crazy sometimes a male who does not have a male to fight with will put the female through the roll of a male for several weeks attacking them just like a male. That is why I do the short mock fight,because after that they will leave the female a lone or not do it in the first place. This behaviour starts in early spring here every year like clock work. The male I introduced is a very young specimen. I choose him because the alpha male(mature 20+ year WC specimen) knows he is always the victor in that enclosure. The smaller 2.1, well those guys are just being "teenagers" and practicing the breeding traits. No combat from them yet. Luckily the 1.1 mature specimens that gets the immature 1.0 for stimulation has kind of an established hiearchy of knowing which ones rule that enclosure. I have not seem biting yet but hope mine keep it civil. I am sure that will change when the immature specimens become mature.
I find it odd how my manouria nests in the fall for me. But for and Yvonne(only other successful manouria breeders I know of) get your eggs in the spring. Wonder why that is for mine to do such. Like clockwork almost to the day both the phayrei and emys emys started nest building from my log for 2012. They began on 7-13-2012 nest building in the outdoor enclosure. I have also never seen my immature emys try to nest build. I didn't think my phayrei would even build a nest being immature. She in my mind is not ready. 32 pounds, 17" 10 year old animal.
Well cant wait till next time on the rope a dope strategy. Also to finally meet you in Daytona. Please bring a male phayrei for me. Hint Hint. I need one bad.
