I feel the same way…Ya because I want to for my tort because if he ever got out somehow or something terrible I would never see him again most likely.
What kind of tortoise do you have?I feel the same way…
I would be lost without her!
Then… if we both answered our own questions….
Now… you have to look into which one is best..
I heard at the swap meat.. that some of these microchips don’t go too far?
Only within 30 miles?
Some have battery problems…?
I didn’t really find all that much about them just bad stuff and I don’t want to discourage us.
I always wait for other people’s response
But look it up and see which one suits YOU best..(check on price too!)![]()
That's what I thought too.I thought it was in the back leg?
Different vets sometimes have different "favorite sites" for placing microchips. When I worked with the Bronx Zoo, the chips were always placed directly into the body cavity (coelom) through the soft tissue in the left rear leg socket.I thought it was in the back leg?
I believe whoever told you about microchips at the swap meet was confusing them with tracking devices which microchips are not.I feel the same way…

No, it doesn't as long as it can be read with the transponder reader. I will say this, also. Often the Radiated Tortoises at the Bronx Zoo were quite small when the chips were placed into the body cavity. When those little guys matured into adults, it was sometimes difficult to get readings because their shells had gotten so thick. We often had to turn the tortoises on their sides and place the reader directly over the left rear leg socket to get a reading.I guess it doesn’t matter where it is.

Thank you @zovick for clearing that up.I believe whoever told you about microchips at the swap meet was confusing them with tracking devices which microchips are not.
Microchips (transponders) have a range of only a foot or two and are not used for locating lost animals. They are used to identify FOUND animals by passing a transponder reader over the animal to see if any reading is achieved. If it is, then the animal can be traced through a registry of transponder numbers and its owner can be notified to go and pick it up.

Also he has made a thread discussing their benefits:Our member @Kapidolo Farms calls them pit tags. He started a thread on it here on the Forum a couple years ago for all of us to use. So far his animals are the only ones on it.
