I think so.
A couple of people have done it.
I asked on another thread just weeks ago.
See if you can look for it and you will read others responses.
I would like to but I am scared.
Is it painful?
Is it safe?
Will it be uncomfortable for them????….

Ya because I want to for my tort because if he ever got out somehow or something terrible I would never see him again most likely.

I feel the same way…
I would be lost without her!
Then… if we both answered our own questions….😝🤭

Now… you have to look into which one is best..
I heard at the swap meat.. that some of these microchips don’t go too far?
Only within 30 miles?
Some have battery problems…?
I didn’t really find all that much about them just bad stuff and I don’t want to discourage us.
I always wait for other people’s response
But look it up and see which one suits YOU best..(check on price too!) 🙏❤️

I thought it was in the back leg?
Different vets sometimes have different "favorite sites" for placing microchips. When I worked with the Bronx Zoo, the chips were always placed directly into the body cavity (coelom) through the soft tissue in the left rear leg socket.

I have seen other vets use the front leg, the area around the tail, and the neck.

I believe whoever told you about microchips at the swap meet was confusing them with tracking devices which microchips are not.

Microchips (transponders) have a range of only a foot or two and are not used for locating lost animals. They are used to identify FOUND animals by passing a transponder reader over the animal to see if any reading is achieved. If it is, then the animal can be traced through a registry of transponder numbers and its owner can be notified to go and pick it up.

Zovick is right, different people prefer different locations for placing the chips. I think that left rear leg is the preferred area but it doesn't really matter.

You can't track a tortoise with an injectable RFID chip. They can only be read from a few inches away with standard readers. They are most useful in situations like @EppsDynasty where you need to differentiate one animal from another. If the tortoise was lost and someone scanned the chip AND (this is an important "and"), you registered the chip on the manufacturers website the then it could theoretically be tracked back to you.

If you are looking for some type of remote tracking ability you might consider an air tag glued to the shell.

@EppsDynasty if you need to chip that many animals I would suggest using these chips: https://www.microchipidsystems.com/ If your property already has a USDA Premise ID you can order specially coded chips with a prefix that is specific to your property and is federally registered. We already had a Premise ID for our goats so we use the same chips in our tortoises. I don't actually know if this is allowed but I like the extra traceability from a theft standpoint. https://www.microchipidsystems.com/product/usda-840-official-microchip/

I guess it doesn’t matter where it is.
No, it doesn't as long as it can be read with the transponder reader. I will say this, also. Often the Radiated Tortoises at the Bronx Zoo were quite small when the chips were placed into the body cavity. When those little guys matured into adults, it was sometimes difficult to get readings because their shells had gotten so thick. We often had to turn the tortoises on their sides and place the reader directly over the left rear leg socket to get a reading.

Thank you @zovick for clearing that up.
I’ll make sure to pass up THAT swap meat next time it’s in town!! 😝👍

Our member @Kapidolo Farms calls them pit tags. He started a thread on it here on the Forum a couple years ago for all of us to use. So far his animals are the only ones on it.
