Do you feed your adult tortoises anything besides the grass they graze on? Reason I ask is because in the past I hadn't supplemented the graze and my two Aldabs are calcium deficient. Last year I started feeding them Mazuri once a week and a few months ago I've had to give them 1500 milligrams of calcium every day. They are still showing signs of weakness. I hesitate to give them Mazuri too often because I don't want them to start to refuse it.

We do not give any supplements, other than during egg laying season, it is also dry & no rain. They do get alot of cactus and misc. things when available, like pumpkins & water melon. Our eggs are perfect, no calcium issues. We have never seen any issues and these are long term kept animals at our program. I have a friend that does supplement his younger ones, they grow way fast and are twice the size that we held back from the same clutch. They are also a little bumpy. I really wanted to post pictures of the differences, however out of respect he does not wish the exposure. I often wonder why some have that issue. I know that some grass, etc. is grown for cosmetic value and no nutritional value. We never get the seeds that are of non nutritional value. Rye is one that is to watch, some are just no good at all. I always refer to the native diets, at times hardly nothing to eat and dried stuff, with hardly any nutritional value. All wild animals seem strong w/o issues. We try to keep it simple and as close to natural as possible, we feel strongly that is part of our fertility success, is a natural diet for our breeding colony. They graze all day, they also produce hugh poops. I keep close eye on all the poops, they are very hugh and full of fiber with a solid structure. This works for us with great success at several levels.

Florida has a calcium based sand in the soil as oppossed to the rest of the countries silicia based sand. grass is going to absorb some of this along with other nutrients we add in terms of fertilizers. You are what you eat applies to grass as well. I add garden lime (pulverized) which is calcium and calcium carbonate to the grass before every rain so it gets washed in and it works very nice for me. obviously I make sure it is completely washed in before the next day when the torts come out.
