Could I allow my 5 year old male out at the same time as a two and a half year old in the big outdoor run on a sunny day? Would he ignore the little one?

No. He'll try to get rid of it. Torts don't share nicely. Keep them separate otherwise you'll have bullying or a fight on your hands.
