I have purchased an enclosure for a couple of Golden Greeks that I plan on purchasing in the near future. The closure needed to be aesthetically pleasing for the purchased to approved by SWMBO so I purchased the exo terra 36x18x18. After reading through the forums I've decided to go with the Powersun UV 100w as my MVB for basking and light on the warm side of the enclosure. Now I was considering what to do for (as close to even) full spectrum lighting for the entire enclosure. I know the fluorescent bulbs (coils) should avoided but the canopy I found that fits my enclosure takes these (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001B5DHV2/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20). How bad are the Repti Glo 2.0 bulbs for visual light if I make sure the pointy end is pointed away from the cage?

SWMBO means: she who must be obeyed, correct?

That is correct, I am home brewer and those forums reference SWMBO quite a bit :)

I would not use those bulbs. Use just a regular lamp bulb. However, with the MVB, you may not need any more light. I was also told the kind in your picture is fine if it is the regular lamp kind. Not a reptile bulb.

Thanks for the info. The canopy supports up to 4 bulbs either 26w fluorescent or 40w incandescent. Is there a recommended bulb and number of bulbs I should use for just even lighting?

I have never used the coil types of bulbs with tortoises, but I would suggest researching some type of full spectrum, daylight, or plant growing CFL. I would be curious to see how the CFL fixture would work for you with those types of bulbs, so let us know what you decide to do.

If you need more light and want uvb, the Reptisun 10.0 tube lights are OK for reptiles and do add UVB long the length of the enclosure. They use them in the UK a lot with a basking bulb for heat.

Read down to post #7 in this thread.

Note: I use the Powersun MVB with extra incandescent lighting to brighten up the enclosure, but GBtortoise (30+ years experience) makes a good point. I also worry because there have been some concerns in studies about UVB exposure from MVB bulbs being more limited than we realized.

Eventually your Greeks will thrive the most with outside sun at least part of the year....
