Hi! I'm a new mom of two Russian Tortoises, we've had them for almost a month now. My partner built a BEAUTIFUL two story tortoise home for them, which we just separated them and moved them into today. Upon doing some research, we realized the pet store sold us both males, and even though we saw no sign of aggression, they were becoming slightly agitated with each other so we figured it was time.

My question is. For the past 3 weeks, at bedtime, we shut off their lights and let them adjust for a few minutes and then we would put them in their little domes/hides and cover them up and they would sleep all night. Tonight, however, neither of them will stay in the hides and they are burrowing in the corner and seemingly very restless. Is this normal with an environment change? They were previously housed in a 40gallon tank here at home until we completed the new setup.

Thanks for reading!

It takes time for them to get adjusted to a new environment, so, both of these behaviors are normal. It may take a month or so. Feel free to drop a few pics of the enclosure too.

That's really nice. Quite the carpenter. If you can go bigger or even build an outdoor enclosure that would be good, but this is amazing, we'll done. Also, if tortoises can see a way out they'll try to "escape " but they do that regardless honestly.
