We recently got a new car. It has a 3.5V6 engine. I changed the oil today at 2,000 miles. It has direct injection. ( DFI) and uses 0-20 oil. Like water.

Son came over and opened the drain plug for me and exclaimed "How old is this oil, it's black"

He couldn't believe there was only 2 thousand miles on it.

The filter removal tool is still attached to the filter....it was so tightly installed that the tool is egg shaped now.

That is some dirty oil for 2k miles. Glad I changed it....i had a "feeling".

A brand new car or a used car but knew to you?
Cuz that's some dark oil for a brand new car after only 2000 miles. I don't know that much about cars, but I do know what the oil is supposed to look like and that's not it, wow!

Most likely break in oil that is supposed to be changed after 500 miles. A very high percentage of NEW engines need a 'Watery' oil to break in said engine. Most people buy a new car and avoid the service manual or 'Scheduled Maintenance' list. Not sure if this is what's happening with yours but it is pretty common. Hyundai?

Isn't that suppose to be told to the new owner when they buy the car?
But that's new to me, never heard of that. Our newest is a 2016 jeep Cherokee bought brand new in 2016, infact bought two of them. Not sure if that's too old for this oil you are talking about, but we were never told anything like that.
Yes, we are guilty on not reading the manuals much lol But, have always been told how often to change the oil and then of course the oil change businesses puts the sticker on for when it's due next time.

So brand new engines (either rebuilt or brand spanking new) have very tight tolerances and require a 'Thinner' oil to lubricate the engine parts. It is not always told to the new owners and some engines do not require "Break-in Oil". Most engines though come with this thinner oil already in them and have a very short life span, usually 500 miles or less.

Interesting, I've been thinking of getting an oil change on my new old vehicle that requires the thinnest oil I've ever used.🤔😊 it's a little brown so time for an oil change at least for winter I think. TFO strikes again 😜🙃👍

Modern car engines with variable valve timing need that thinner oil

Factory fill for Mercedes is Mobil 1 at the rated weight and capacity.

Looking at that photo (metal shavings?), I'd be taking that car straight back to the dealer AND filling out the extended warranty paperwork. Then I'd make sure I payed them to do the changes so they have the records.
