I just went to the nursery to buy Rose Of Sharon. I could not decide which color flower to get, white or pink! Then the guy told me they were 40% off! Done deal, I now have both!

If you want plants for next year, there cheep now that its the end of the season!

I actually just bought one last month, which for me was perfect timing because I was able to witness the flowers bloom.

Gorgeous flower!
One of my favourite colors, the other being yellow.
I can't grow the Rose of Sharon but can manage
the Hibiscus but it has to be brought in in the winter.
They go dorment and then spring back to life
in the spring.
Oh how I wish I lived in a tropical country.

Traveller,
Here is some info on Hardy Hibiscus. Hope this helps.

We are continuing our hybridization efforts to hopefully bring you more unique and hardy perennials, as well. Remember that all
Our cultivars are hardy to -30 F
http://www.flemingsflowerfields.com/flowers.htm

It is found in wetlands and along the riverine systems of the southeastern United States from Texas to the Atlantic states, its territory extending northward to southern Ontario. In Canada it is listed as a species of special concern by the Species at Risk Act. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus_moscheutos

The hibiscus can basically be grown from San Antonio north to Canada, as long as the required winter period is long enough for them to go dormant after the first frost, Malinowski said. The plants resprout from the root the following spring. http://www.physorg.com/news169471324.html

Ah great! Thanks for the info.
If we were living along Lake Erie or Lake Ontario we'd
be able to grow them for sure, but where we are it can and does dip down to
-40 F on a regular basis.
I'm already starting to shiver at what our electricity bill will
be this coming winter.

Yes, hibiscus is safe and a great food to feed torts. Most of them seem to love it too! Just make sure it's free of pesticides/fertilizers. That's why you need to let it sit for 3-6 months if you buy one from a nursery, to let the pesticides leech out. It's really tough to find organic.

Rose of Sharon is a type of Hibiscus in my opinion. So, yes. All types of this flower are safe.
